The Zijlsloep is a 17' sailing sloop without a jib, gaff-rigged and equipped with a POD electric support engine. The ship is named after the medieval tidal creek Zijl, and it is a pun for the Dutch word zeilsloep.

This is an easy going sailing ship, with lots of comfort for an open daysailer. It will handle shallow waters, inland lakes, river delta and near shore sea-sailing.

Obvious is the simple rigging, needed to make the Zijlsloep a one-man ship. Here is the Classic version with lots of teak and comfortable cushions. End to end the ship is just over 5m long.Zijlsloep Classic under sail

The electric engine is controlled from the cockpit with a key and a joystick. Additionally one may add sigarette lighters for 12V devices (GPS, smart phone, GSM, PDA, ...), in the picture there are two below the seat.

Below the seat are the controls for the running lights and the pump. The small metallic square is one of the floor lights in the Zijlsloep Classic.Zijlsloep engine controls

By removing the mast and rigging (in less than 15 minutes) an electric sloop remains, easy to take into town for some shopping or a drink. Up to eight people may board and have enough room to sit down.

The Zijlsloep is used as matrimonial ship, but with Beaufort 6 heads-up it is quite a ride to the restaurant. On board bride and groom, two brides maids, two staff.

Here the front half of the ship cover is up, which will keep passengers dry in rain and with headwind waves. There is room enough to sit but also to sail: the boom is free of the cover top.Zijlsloep with front cover
